Bianca leading her class at the National 2010
Life story of Bianca
On the 27th of October 2006, my pet, German Shepherd, Zena, had five puppies; two girls and three boys. Dad said “We are going to keep a boy and girl”. Dad picked the one he considered the best out of the girls and gave me the task of selecting what I considered to be the best boy. We watched the puppies carefully over the next few weeks and discussed them daily. Pretty soon we were both able to see which ones were the pick of the litter. When it came to choosing, Dad picked one and named her Bianca. I chose the boy and named him Be-Levis. As the weeks went by, one puppy was sold and then another and another.
A COUPLE MONTHS LATER:
As the puppies grew older they started to show their true colours. Bianca was showing signs of having the qualities we needed for her to be great show dog. She just kept getting better and better but the boy did not. This was when the campaign for Bianca training towards winning a gold medal in open, began. She trained once a day. We used the little park at the back of our house and walked her in circles for 15 mins. With me in front and Bianca pulling powerfully behind, she was able to learn to stride and extend her forequarter and hindquarters in a slow / fast powerful walk, as well as developing an outreaching gait with an effective reach. Training her once a day was all she needed to develop these structural proportions. Dad chose well. She was shaping up to be a truly great show dog.
HER FIRST SHOW:
Bianca’s first show was in her home state, South Australia, under Judge Peter Cocks, on the 24th February 2007. When Bianca won her first show under Peter Cocks, we knew that we had a quality puppy in our backyard. From here, Bianca’s first big show was the 35th National Show in Sydney, in the ‘Baby Puppy Bitch’ category, where she came 6th.
ONWARDS:
From here she was able to win ‘Minor Puppy’ class, in Adelaide at the championship show under Judge MR Jurgen Neddermeyer and then the ‘Minor Puppy’ in the Show under Herr F Goldlust. Also another big result for us was when she came 5th at the ‘Main Breed’ show in Adelaide in 2007. (Dad still thinks that she should have won the class.) From here she went on and won more and more championship shows in Australia under local and overseas judges. Bianca’s first big win was when she won first place in Intermediate class at the South Australian State Breed Show. With this win also came her father Kwint, who was crowned ‘State Sieger’ under MR Jurgen Neddermeyer.
This then was followed up with her first win in ‘Open Bitch’ class. This was in Adelaide on the 15th of November 2008 under Mr. James Rodger. The same show she was also given the privilege of being ‘BEST IN SHOW’. This was where Dad and I became excited about what we could achieve with Bianca. Her next big accomplishment happened in the sunshine state of Queensland. Besides panicking about Bianca and how she would go in her first ‘Open Bitch’ class at a National, we also had other things on our mind ie. how our little boy ‘Timo’ would go. Besides that, Bianca was called out, 16th place, so Dad and I had our work cut out. As the class went on, towards the end Bianca was given her chance and moved up, with her competition Sannjesa Electra right behind her. They both moved in the top ten and then from there it became a competitive battle for who would be placed 9th and 10th. In the end Bianca was the one that fell behind as Sannjesa Electra moved in front to take 9th, so Dad and I were happy with a top ten result at her first national, in open.
This became the start of a new period of great success for Bianca. Starting this off was a win under MR Jurgen Neddermeyer at the State Breed in South Australia, where Bianca was crowned ‘STATE SIEGERIN’. She then continued on this winning streak in Adelaide under Mr. Peter Flynn. To finish off the year, Bianca was placed 2nd at the Working Dog Club of Victoria. Inc. Show, under Judge, Herr Richard Brauch. SV and then to top it off, Bianca won the highest point scorer in South Australia.
After a hard year of training and showing, it was time to give Bianca a break. She was rested until early February, and then she began training in earnest for the national. Starting off in the early hours of the morning Dad and I would take Timo and Bianca for a hard 15 minute workout. After 2 weeks of just getting the dogs into a rhythm of hard training in the scorching heat, Dad decided to up the tempo with a bike ride in the morning and a free run, at night, chasing the ball. This was the task at hand for Bianca and Timo for the next month or two, with an added change of exercise, such as a day off or a 4 km run. This was the critical part then, where Dad and I argued on what extra touches we needed to do for Bianca so she would look ‘spanking’.
National:
The week of the national, I was nervous and excited. On Monday when Dad arrived home, we took the dogs out for some fun just chasing the ball. Thursday night, we flew out to Melbourne. Arriving and ready to explore, we searched for our motel. We got up early in the cold of the morning with a big day head of us, after not having much sleep due to getting a little lost the night before. We had a great day with my little boy coming 2nd. Catching up with everyone was fun and at the end of the day Bianca and I were looking for a good nights sleep ready for Saturday. Saturday just flew passed and bedtime came all too quickly.
Sunday arrived. The day we’d been waiting for. Bianca’s big day! After waiting and waiting till her individual, the time finally arrived. Dad and I had planned a strategy of carefully timing where the gate was when she could make her appearance to the judge. After waiting for a while it was time, and we heard the call out order. After Bianca completed her run, I was shocked at being called out in the top four. After running in front for many laps I started to feel confident and I started to realize that Bianca had a very good chance, so I kept running. After turning the corner I saw Dad and Bianca moving up into first place and I felt a feeling that I can’t describe. Bianca stayed running in front for many more laps. When they finally stop, I heard the announcement that this was the open class winner for this year’s national. Bianca had won! After hearing this, I was overwhelmed with happiness. In fact I thought I was going to cry. I was so proud of my little girl’s achievements. After having a brief moment with Bianca and Dad, we began receiving congratulations from many people. The experience was indescribable. I was still feeling emotional and teary about Bianca’s win. Bianca could now relax for a while after a couple of hard hours of work, but then had to be ready for another quick round of exercise were she had a chance of being selected as Best Bitch in Show. She WAS given that privilege, as well as being the National Siegerin under judge, Herr Hans-Ludger Goeke. SV. (Gmy).
Bianca in general:
There is much more to Bianca than just being a hard working show dog to dad and I. Bianca can be described in many different ways. She can be a pain and very annoying but most of all she is my little girl. This is the side of Bianca that only her family see. In the ring she is our perfectly behaved, well trained show dog. Bianca has now been with us for nearly three years, and is very like her mother, Zena. I am proud to say that this highly successful show dog is, at home, a much loved family pet, which I see every day. She doesn’t change. She jumps on me, licks me, goes and gets her ball or lies down on the grass for a cuddle and a pat. I feel that her and I are together as one. If I go for a jog, she’ll cry until I get her collar and lead then she runs alongside of me no matter how far I go. She is a loyal and wonderful friend. Other times she’ll just lie in the sun or play some footy in the backyard.
All of these activities describe how you can bond with and know your dog. I know her and she knows me.
Now it’s time for her next big, important challenge, which will be to mother of a litter of puppies.
This is the story of Dad and I and our life with our best friend and our magnificently, successful show dog, Bianca.
